MAKING INVISIBLE HEROES VISIBLE

SEAFARERS is not a book about ships. This photo book is a visual homage to those who rarely take centre stage, even though they're what makes global trade possible in the first place: the seafarers aboard the world's container ships. For six weeks, photographer Patrick Ludolph accompanied life on board – on routes between Asia, Europe and South America. The result is a multi-layered photographic narrative that gives a stage to the people behind the machinery of global trade.

The book's design follows this documentary ambition with an attitude that consciously avoids any overstaging. Clarity, structure and calm define the visual concept. The photos take centre stage – large, uncropped, with room to breathe. Text and image alternate in a calm rhythm, accompanied by a reduced typography that provides orientation without stepping into the foreground.

As a graphic thread, subtle technical elements from the world of container shipping were woven into the design – such as markings, grids and symbols found aboard the ships. They never dominate, but create an atmospheric connection to the subject and give the book an additional visual depth.

The chapters are organised thematically, from personal impressions to insights into technical processes – connected by a thoughtful, calm design that creates closeness without being intrusive. The materiality underlines this ambition: paper choice, printing and finishing were deliberately chosen to carry the photographic quality and give the subject the value it deserves.
